Matt Meakins “Rivers Edge” Course review

July 15th, 2007
Hi guys.

We had a great time last Friday. Thanks again and sorry it has taken me a week to get a review to ya.

The course is one of the best layouts around here. Challenging but not to the point it is not fun. It definitely rewards risk-taking (lots of lay-up or go-for-it shots to the well-guarded greens). Friendly folks (full service… we skipped the bag drop and the bag guy just drove our cart out in the parking lot to meet us, without us asking). A great (full) bar and tasty restaurant in the clubhouse to boot.

The views and the breeze from the Shallotte River were quite nice. Holes 8, 9 and 17, 18 are awesome holes along the river.

I will say that this course was not designed for the hot summers in Brunswick County. It has bent greens and they have a very difficult time keeping them from browning-out in the 90+ degree heat. On the first week of July (not even at the warmest time of the year) the greens were horribly slow because they have to keep the grass long and they were still burnt. All of the sand appeared to be powdery and well-groomed (unfortunately, I got to test it more than once! :) ).

That being said… as long as you are not playing July-August (June and September may be marginal), arguably one of the best tracks around here.

Thanks again y’all! Pops says hola!

Played Myrtlewood Palmetto July 10th

July 12th, 2007

After aeration in early June, The greens have come back to near perfection (well for July anyway) All of the construction has been finnished and the course is business as usual. Fairways are always nicely kept. Below is a shot of the #18 Fairway…  18th Fairway, Myrtlewood

#6 Fairway

Played Arrowhead last week…

July 9th, 2007

I played Arrowhead last week and even with the almost unbearable heat, I had a great round. As usual, Arrowhead amazed me. Arowhead is in my opinion one of the areas top 5 best kept golf courses. The lakes 9 is my favorite link. I only lost 3 balls on the lakes nine. Last time it was more like 5. The greens, dispite aeration were in very good shape. The fairways were freshly cut and in outstanding condition.
